WHY WOMEN ADORE ADELE
One of my favourite female singers of all time, Adele is currently on tour Down Under. Unfortunately, I missed it because I was too busy being all classy and fine dining with my family. I’m not going to pretend I’m not jealous or have major FOMO, but when you gotta choose between a Big Mac and the biggest music star in history… Well, we know how that ends up.
Admittedly, I am a late bloomer and only really got into Adele after her new album 25 hit iTunes. To put that into visual terms, I am the woman who desperately wants to jump on the bandwagon but trails behind shouting “Adele, I think I love you! Is there room for one more emotionally charged woman?”
NEVERTHELESS. This woman is DIVINE. But don’t let me sway you – her 25 million Instagram followers will do that for you. In fact, I wrote a list of what makes her so much more than a one-time wonder. Every now and then, the industry brings out someone exceptional that you KNOW will go down in Wikipedia history and here’s why:
1. TALENT
These days you can buy your way to fame. You can fake it, inherit it and go as far as to rub shoulders with people in high places to get noticed. But when you are this talented, it will not go unnoticed. No amount of auto-tune and studio embellishments will ever produce the scale of audience and album sales that Adele does.
You simply cannot manufacture this level of God-given talent. You’re either born with it or you’re not. And I really wouldn’t be surprised if she emerged from the womb blurting out Ava Maria leaving everyone in wonder and awe. The woman has sold 7 million copies of her debut album 19, 31 million copies of 21, and (to date) 20 million copies of 25. Fake shit doesn’t sell double/triple platinum like this. She’s not an imposter, she’s the real deal.
2. AUTHENTICITY
The thing with artists that are pumped out by the music industry is we can all smell a fake a mile away. The general public are more perceptive than what the suits in boardrooms who manufacture the Bieber’s and Beyonce’s of today are led to believe. If someone comes out of the pop machine, we will know straight away.
At first, it was a slow burn with Adele. In every tone, tune and lyric, you can hear an honest expression of what it is to love and lose – a universal truth we have all experienced. There’s a bit of Adele in all of us, right? And that’s what makes her resonate so well with her fans. The everyday, ordinary people that experience conflict in relationships and wonder every now and then what the heck we’re doing with our lives as we take another sip of wine. She gets us. And we get her.
3. PASSION
You can just HEAR that she loves to write and sing. Sure, there are millions of other people out there who would love to do this gig for a living. But, if there wasn’t a dime to be made or a fan in sight, I truly believe Adele would still sing ’til her heart’s content. Adele comes across as generous – the kind of person that wants to share what she has with others to enjoy.
Like any artist and their craft, it’s all because of the love of it. I bet Adele never even set out to be rich and famous; they’re just bi-products of a truly talented woman who could be honest with herself and the world. This whole thing is about Adele being true to Adele, and as she’s broadcast around the world you can hear her heart beating.
4. HUMILITY
The world tells you to get what you want, you must climb over others, push ahead and big note yourself. Well, it might get you to the top, but it’ll just be a matter of time and the proud will fall. You see it happening with young stars put into the spotlight too quickly that become so famous, they’re blinded by their own sense of importance. With Adele, I see a beautiful, confident and sassy woman who is in touch with the real world. She is human in every way, and yet she is elegant and poised. It’s easy to get washed-up and lose perspective when, quite frankly, you could have anything and everything you want. In her songs, I hear the gentle humility of a young woman admit that she can’t just have the affection and love of someone because she demands it. She is grounded with her feet firmly planted in reality, a rare attribute in the world of stardom.
5. CONFIDENCE
When Adele graces that stage, you KNOW she owns it. In every interview and television appearance, I can see her exude a level of confidence that basically says this: “I don’t give a f*** what you think about me.” I love it. We all love it, we need more of it. As a woman in a society that sets an impossible standard when it comes to how you look, it is both freeing and refreshing. Adele once said, “I love food and hate exercise, I don’t have time to work out. I don’t want to be on the cover of Playboy or Vogue. I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.”
Can we all just take a moment to take in the sheer awesomeness of this statement? And for the record, in our eyes, you are GORGEOUS. Seriously. Adele should be crowned queen of culture because I see her leading a culture shift where women feel empowered to be themselves. Fitspo makes you obsessed and annoying to be around. Being confident makes you sexy beyond belief, and Adele shows us that a million times over.
Really, I could write a whole thesis on why Adele is amazing, and I’m sure her adoring fans could too. She’s a real diamond in the rough within a high turnover industry that has dealt many casualties. Hello, and let’s hope it’s never goodbye.
