Notorious Caravel- The 15th Century Recreation
Notorious caravel has been a project of Graeme Wylie and wife Felicite. Construction was inspired by a legends of a dark caravel shipwrecked in the Armstrong Bay area.
The dark Caravelles, favoured by pirates, were used in the 15th century to plunder the riches of the east.
This incredible boat has taken Graeme Wiley over 10 years to build and set sail at Port Fairy in 2011.
If you are lucky enough to catch Graeme and Felicite in their travels you can get on board Notorious.
Notorious is the only vessel of its kind. We thought it was fitting to visit the masterpiece on International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
For children this is an opportunity to experience what these boats really looked like up close. Notorious is made from 300 tons of reclaimed timber and the couple have covered over 11,000 miles in the boat.
My son is still talking about Notorious 24 hours later. Both Graeme and Felicite are very friendly. We felt really grateful for the opportunity and really thankful for such a warm welcome onto the boat.
The cost to get on board and look around on this occasion – $5 for an adult and $2 for a child. A small price to pay knowing the amount of money and man hours invested in such a huge project.
The Notorious Caravel is currently anchored at Brisbane’s South Bank River Outlook Ferry Terminal however if you follow the Notorious Facebook page you can keep an eye out on its travels.
Notorious has left the South Bank terminal however you can experience Maritime history daily at the Queensland Maritime Museum, South Bank, Brisbane
