I Would Let Son Watch Suicide Squad.
On a few levels we know [or say] its wrong to let children watch violent movies like Suicide Squad. Especially those with sexual references and drugs. My son has seen the Squad trailers and couldn’t care less about the movie. He geeks out on most comic movies – not this one. He has asked me if he is allowed to watch it.
I would let my child see Suicide Squad if the only concern was the violence alone. If I sheltered him from every 13+ movie he would probably be sneaking off to google snips of it just to get a peak because its taboo ya know?
You can call me a bad parent – that’s fine. I already know there are times where I allow my son to engage in things he probably shouldn’t. I think most parents are guilty of things they know aren’t suitable – I’m not afraid to admit it.
Before you judge me. Does your child watch YouTube? You probably have no idea what shit your child is watching. You only have to log out to turn the safety filter off or flick it off in the settings. The content on YouTube is far worse than any future Suicide Squad you will ever see.
If you do successfully censor what your child watches I think you are great. There are several shades of parenting and your way works for you.
DC Entertainment Inc produced this movie then did an expensive reshoot to “lighten” it up which says to me despite the M Rating they are hoping to hit a younger audience. Does this make it right to let a child see it? You are the parent, you decide.
That Double Standard Though.
Music clips – although entertaining – are absolute bullshit.
Do you think a 10-year-old boy watches Avengers and goes “Yeah, I’m going to be Tony Stark when I grow up, put a metal suit on and fuck shit up”.
He knows damn well its a movie and it ENDS AT THE CREDITS.
Music is everywhere. We have access to it even when we don’t necessarily want to. Music Film clips have their own platform (Vevo) and morning shows. We love it too, those film clips make you wanna work work work…..but then the internet rages when we see Obama’s daughter twerking at a party.
Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus is getting paid.
What does your child think when they see this…
Or This….

People don’t REALLY turn up to parties and dry hump each other do they Mum? Ummmm. No.
Don’t get me twisted. I am not saying music clips should be banned. I’m saying we should get our head straight. While we start flailing around freaking out about comic-based movies we are completely forgetting the DAILY unrated content our children have access to.
When it comes to young impressionable teens I believe these music clips along with magazines and media, in general, are far more responsible than the film industry for the negative effects we are flapping our arms about.
Suicide Squad and its 13+ Rating isn’t going to make your teenager a murderer. They might actually see the downsides of being a criminal or the underlying message that even the worst people can choose to do good. Because being good is a “choice”.
It’s up to you to help your child distinguish fantasy from reality.
You can’t blame a movie for someone’s actions.
Not even when it comes to your child.
