I purchased the DJI Osmo Pocket from Catch Marketplace in September 2019.
I was originally attracted to the DJI Osmo pocket for its petite size.
Measuring 4.8 x 1.5 x 1.1 inches, the product offers a discreet way to vlog in public places, it is considerably smaller than a GoPro attached to a handheld tripod.
There are a lot of reviews insisting that the camera needs to be connected to your phone to be used effectively. This is just not true.
Sure, the extra features are fantastic, however, you can still shoot great video without it.
Unboxing: First Impressions
The product came well packaged with instructions, case, and a charger.
The exterior of the gimbal is smooth plastic, the back case has a matt coating.
Operation of the camera is done by two simplistic buttons and a touch screen.
When powered off the lens sits off to the side, protecting it from being scratched.
Using The DJI Osmo Pocket
I am but a mere mortal in the vlogging world.
These devices give beginners and amateurs like me, a chance to create something a bit more polished.
I like to vlog product reviews, my travels and family life. This camera is perfect for me.
The functions are easily accessible via the touchscreen. The camera is incredibly smooth and easy to use.
Recording can be done in 4K/60fps video at 100 Mbps, slow motion video at 1080p/120fps 4x, and photos at 12 MP with a pixel size of 1.55 μm.
Taking Panorama’s using the DJI Osmo is so much easier than a smartphone!
The camera will rotate to take 4 separate pictures and stitch them together, creating a seamless final capture.
The camera is so incredibly light to use and the size means never having to leave your equipment at home.
Extra Functions
Face/movement tracking and additional editing options are available through the DJI Osmo App,
This is accessible by downloading the DJI Mimo app and plugging the camera into your phone.
There is also the Storys feature. This is similar to GoPros “Quik” , wrapping up the videos you choose into a short story with music and filter options. Example of the Story Feature:
The Mimo App has a beauty filter, which is great for up-close vlogs that involve commentary.
While I’m not a fan over overly edited content, having a filter that reduces imperfections and dark circles may give some people the confidence to appear in front of a camera.
Using the camera with the phone plugged in does make it more difficult to use, if you have a tripod for your phone, I recommend setting that up to hold the whole setup if you don’t plan on moving around while you film.
Is it better than the GoPro?
I have the Go Pro Hero 6 and previously used the Hero 5.
The short answer is no, the DJI Osmo is not better than the GoPro.
It is considerably cheaper.
DJI Osmo Pocket might rate better for you based on value for money and depend on your intended use.
From an image quality and functionality perspective, the GoPro is far more superior.
The GoPro has a tougher exterior, a wider range of capture and is fully waterproof, no additional case needed.
For a beginner or a vlogger that wants one simple piece of equipment, Osmo Pocket will give your videos a professional edge.
It may not be better than the GoPro, but it has become my preferred device due to size and convenience.
Image Stabilization is a tricky one, if you are a beginner, I think you’ll find the DJI Osmo Pocket provides far better image stabilization. This is simply because filming with the product is a piece of cake.
Casey Niestat demonstrates the two products side by side and you may find you really can’t decide which product you like better. (unfortunately, Casey had his hand over the mic, so the audio is not a true comparison)
Buying The DJI Osmo Pocket
Shop around! I found the cheapest price in Australia was on Catch Marketplace. US Customers may want to compare prices on Amazon.
