Morning Sickness. When Your Up The Duff & Crook As A Sick Chook.

Morning Sickness

Morning Sickness, It’s pretty shit isn’t it? But wait there’s more. Did you know there is next level morning sickness? It’s called Hyperemesis gravidarum. Pretty fancy huh.

What Is HG Exactly?  Hyperemesis gravidarum is a condition characterised by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance. <– I found that on google

I’ve experienced this next level morning sickness with all of my pregnancies, I do NOT wish it on anyone. God Dayummmm I was so sick. I tried everything, I googled the shiz out of morning sickness tips only find very little that helped.

The worst part of the sickness lasted until around 16 weeks, this is the time where you barely look pregnant so people just treat you like a hypochondriac. But even a mild case of Hyperemesis gravidarum can be pretty debilitating. Especially if you already have children or work and rest periods just aren’t an option.

If you’re pregnant and feeling like you may have out of the ordinary morning sickness I only have one piece of advice. Ignore people’s bullshit. You may get told you need to just toughen up by your family or friends. Your husband might be moaning that you haven’t got the whole house clean and a baked dinner isn’t greeting him when he arrives home.

Well, fuck them. You’re only pregnant for a very small portion of your life. Whoopdy doo, you are not superwoman for a whole 9 months. Don’t beat yourself up about it, you will only feel worse. It’s also not your job to explain your situation, throw a book at them but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t make a difference.

Some things I tried from the wonderful world of google which kinda sorta helped,

  • Dry Biscuits
  • REST
  • Ginger
  • Eating Less but more frequently
  • Antacids
  • Herbal Tea
  • Avoiding Dairy
  • Anti-Nausea Medication from my GP

HG left me vomiting food out of my nose during the first trimester. The second trimester was just full on nausea, no actual vomiting. Eventually, the sickness faded away but by that time I felt like a giant whale and didn’t enjoy a lot of comfort in the last term of pregnancy. I carry big on a pair of chicken legs.

Do you have any morning sickness tips that worked for you? I’m happy to add them to the list!

If you have a friend who is carrying a baby and is not well, send them this or TELL THEM it’s okay. You could even drop in some gingernut biscuits next time you are in her area.

  1. Fruit tingles were my saviour………although it took until pregnancy number 3 (16 years ago) for someone to tell me about them!!

I was still chucking at 35 weeks with #2, then delivered him at 36 weeks- and some bright GP had given me a ‘miracle drug’ called “Ancolan” (it was an anti-histamine that also worked for morning sickness) that disappeared without a trace 21 years ago now and my son has ‘Inattentive ADD’ and other cognitive issues. So, I urge everyone to only take the ‘tried and true’ medications for fear of never being able to find it again to assess if it played any role!!

I did get overly spoilt with son #1- not sick, losing weight, dutifully taking the pill…….and then lost a few clots so went to a family planning clinic to get a gynae referral (that bulk-billed), only to go through their screening process of urine testing for infection and pregnancy testing……Yep!! 5 months ‘up the duff’ and I didn’t even know! (so much for being a highly qualified Div.1 RN!! (he arrived at 35 weeks- curve ball in life plans!).

    Ya gotta love it 😉

    1. Gosh I knew at 5 weeks with all of mine. Seriously who starts vomiting at 5 weeks!!! ME THATS WHO! Argh! I used the Maxalon the second pregnancy because it was just too severe, but the others I just tried to manage. I agree, always try and manage before opting for pharma drugs – its a tough call.
