Over 20,000 Designs at Shell World, Yeppoon

My stop at Shell World Yeppoon was planned well in advance. I knew there would be one thing my kids would be expecting me to come home on my trip to Far North Queensland. Sea Shells.

Collecting & Buying Sea Shells In Australia

Shell Stores without ethical farming certification are often selling products pulled from coral reefs, causing major damage to ocean ecosystems. With this knowledge, I vowed not to take any shells directly from the beach during my trip.

Unfortunately, I could not find any information about where Shell World gets its stock on sale. In Australia, we do have some regulated areas for seashell collecting on land, but that does not protect the bi-product from commercial fishing nets.

Shell World Yeppoon is a display of over 20,000 shells which include marine, land and fossil molluscs.

If you are after some shells to take home, this is your one-stop-shop. Shells start from 50c – $5 for common designs like cowries, cones, and scallops.

There are more expensive shells (large Nautilus designs, Abalone, and more), some kept in cabinets for serious buyers to consider.

Sea Shell World is located in the same building as the Tourism Information Centre.
